Michigan clinicals for Samford NP students
Samford's FNP and PMHNP tracks all accept Michigan nurses, and the September 2025 licensure disclosure names Michigan as a state where they meet licensure requirements. Michigan stands outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your clinical days there depend on a Michigan RN license. On the other side of the ledger, research turned up no Michigan step that an out-of-state school must clear before its NP students start rotations.

Can you enroll from Michigan? Samford's answer
Yes, for every NP program. Samford's NP licensure disclosure (as of September 3, 2025) prints Michigan with no asterisk, and the Out-of-State Applicants tables leave it off. Its Michigan row points to a nursing licensure document from LARA, the department that houses the Michigan Board of Nursing.

What Michigan asks of a school from another state
On the record, nothing extra. Our research found no Michigan rule or Board guidance requiring a school from another state to win approval, or file a notice, ahead of placing students in Michigan. The Board's approval rules, which start at Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301, speak to programs located inside Michigan, and out-of-state graduates are recognized through national accreditation such as CCNE when they apply for a license. The Board itself was not asked.
Silence in the rules still leaves Samford's own review. Its graduate handbook warns that state rules and regulations can sink a clinical rotation request, and Michigan health systems each set their own onboarding. Ask your program coordinator whether the NP Clinical Manual says anything about Michigan before you accept a preceptor's offer, and read our overview of clinicals outside Alabama.
Restricted practice and your Michigan preceptor
AANP ranks Michigan as restricted because an NP there needs physician delegation to prescribe controlled substances. The limit concerns prescribing. For your courses, a Michigan NP or a physician can serve as preceptor for NURG 723 adult care, NURG 724 family practice or the psychiatric run from NURG 788 through NURG 790, with Samford approving each one.
Vetting a Michigan NP has one local wrinkle: the state grants the NP specialty only to someone who is already a Michigan-licensed RN and nationally certified by a body the Board accepts, so check both when you verify a preceptor. PMHNP students also need therapy hours in NURG 767 with a Samford approved preceptor: 75 in the plans of study, a minimum of 60 in the catalog, a gap to settle with your course faculty.
Detroit to Grand Rapids: where Michigan students look
Metro Detroit is the largest pool at about 4.4 million people in 2025 Census estimates. Grand Rapids comes second with 1,183,645, then Lansing at 479,722 and Flint at 401,093. Trinity Health Michigan, McLaren Health Care, Michigan Medicine at the University of Michigan, Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health are the names students tend to know. Treat them as examples of where to search, since any site still needs Samford's approval, and because most of Samford's hundreds of affiliation agreements sit in the Southeast, a Michigan clinic may need a new one.
Michigan's health department once ran a preceptor pilot alongside MSU's nursing college; it has finished and was limited to MSU students. No Michigan tax credit for preceptors turned up in our research.
A Michigan license, since the compact stops at the border
Samford's handbook ties clinicals to licensure: a current, unencumbered RN license at home and in each clinical state. Michigan remains outside the compact, with HB 4246 still pending. A multistate license from Ohio or Indiana therefore does not carry you into a Michigan clinic, and a Michigan license does not carry you out: a rotation across the line in Ohio or Indiana needs a license from that state too.
New Michigan RN licensees face three extra items: a criminal background check, a one-time lesson on identifying human trafficking, and a two-hour implicit bias course taken within five years of licensure. Questions Samford students ask
How many hours will my Michigan preceptor need to commit to?
It depends on the course. Samford's FNP plans list 150 hours for NURG 723 and 300 each for NURG 724 and NURG 730, and the PMHNP plans list 150, 225 and 300 for NURG 788, NURG 789 and NURG 790. At the 10 to 20 weekly hours Samford's program pages describe, a 300-hour course fills most of a term.
Will a Samford FNP degree qualify me for NP certification in Michigan?
Samford's disclosure says its MSN and DNP nurse practitioner tracks meet Michigan's educational requirements for licensure, though each board still rules on individual applications. After graduation, Michigan's NP specialty follows from your Michigan RN license plus a recognized national certification; our certification exams page covers the national boards.
Can my Michigan employer's clinic host my Samford rotation?
Samford publishes little on clinicals at an employer. Its DNP Nurse Leader page keeps practicum hours outside the student's job, but no public NP rule says the same, so ask your program coordinator before you plan around your own unit. Our page on clinicals where you work sets out what is known.
Do Michigan students attend Samford's campus intensives in person?
Yes. The FNP MSN and certificate call for two to three on-campus intensives in Birmingham, the FNP BSN to DNP sets three campus sessions lasting two to four days, and PMHNP students attend one or two. Put those trips on your calendar early; the intensives guide shows where each one falls.
