The RN license Samford requires for clinicals
Samford's 2026-27 Graduate Nursing Student Handbook requires a current, unencumbered RN license in the state where you practice and in every state where you have a clinical rotation. A multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact covers most of the states Samford accepts, though not all of them. Settle the license question before a rotation request goes in, because every later step rests on it.

What the handbook requires
The rule is one sentence in the 2026-27 Graduate Nursing Student Handbook: students must possess a current unencumbered RN license in the state of practice and in the state of all clinical rotations. It sits in the same list as the Health Data Record, BLS certification and the background check, which our page on clinical compliance requirements covers item by item.
Read it as two tests. The first is the state where you work as a nurse. The second is every state where a clinical rotation takes place, which can differ from the first if you rotate across a state line or move during the program. Each license has to be current, and none can be encumbered.
Admission requirements, such as those for the FNP BSN to DNP and the online RN to BSN, ask for an unencumbered license too, so the rule runs from application to your final clinical hour.
How the Nurse Licensure Compact fits
A multistate RN license issued by your compact home state lets you practice as an RN in the other compact states, which is how most Samford students pass the every-clinical-state test without collecting licenses. Alabama put the compact into effect on January 1, 2020. Among the jurisdictions where Samford accepts NP applicants, the picture looks like this, based on compact data checked in September 2026:

A rotation in any jurisdiction in the last two rows needs that jurisdiction's own RN license, even when you hold a multistate license. Compact membership changes, so check the current map on the NCSBN compact site before you plan a rotation.
Common license situations
- Alabama multistate license, rotation in Georgia or Tennessee: the compact covers the license test, and what remains is Samford's approval and the other state's rules.
- Alabama multistate license, rotation in Illinois: you also need an Illinois RN license before the first clinical day.
- Single-state Michigan license, every rotation in Michigan: that one license covers both your practice state and your clinical state.
- Single-state Illinois license, rotation in Indiana: a single-state license stops at the border, so you need an Indiana license as well.
- Multistate license from another compact state, such as Florida or Texas: the same privilege applies, and Samford should know if your home state changes.
Some states echo Samford's rule in their own standards. Mississippi's higher education board expects APRN clinical students to hold an unencumbered RN license for the state where they do clinicals, and Georgia asks its residents in out-of-state programs to hold a Georgia or multistate license. State reviews of out-of-state programs are a separate hurdle, covered on our page about clinicals outside Alabama.
A license that covers your home state may not cover the clinic's state. Check the compact map before you ask a preceptor there.
License rules at admission
For the NP tracks, Samford turns away applicants who reside in any of 16 states, or whose only license comes from one of them: Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The wording turns on residence and on holding only such a license, so an extra license from one of those states is not, on its face, a bar for someone living and licensed in an accepted state. The online RN to BSN keeps a different list, and Samford's two versions disagree. The program page says Samford cannot accept nursing licenses from 16 states that include Missouri and Wyoming but not Nevada, while the BSN licensure disclosure marks Nevada and Wyoming but not Missouri. If you hold a license from any of those three, ask the RN to BSN coordinator before applying.
Nurse anesthesia is stricter. The Class of 2029 handbook requires a current, unencumbered multistate license by January 31 and says the multistate license is needed to meet all case requirements. The state authorization page covers Samford's disclosures in full.
ADN entry: licensed RNs without a BSN
Samford's ADN to MSN options for FNP and PMHNP admit licensed RNs who hold an associate degree, with a 3.0 GPA, an August start and a June 1 deadline. The license rule is identical to the one for BSN-entry students. The first courses, NURG 505 and NURG 506, bridge into graduate work and must be passed before the rest of the plan, and the catalog notes that ADN-entry graduates do not earn a bachelor's degree along the way.
Preceptor courses come later, which gives you time to sort out any license the clinical state will require. In the FNP ADN plan, the first one is NURG 723 in the second summer; in the PMHNP ADN plan, it is NURG 767 in the second spring, followed by NURG 788 that summer. Keeping the license current and reporting changes
The handbook asks students to bring required health information up to date before registration each semester so it runs through the end of the term. Apply the same habit to your license: if a renewal date falls mid-semester, renew early so no clinical day lands on a lapsed license.
Moving changes the license picture, since the new state may need its own license and may have its own rules for out-of-state programs. Tell your program coordinator before you relocate, as the handbook requires.
If a board ever places an order, condition or restriction on your license, raise it with your program coordinator at once. The handbook's standard is an unencumbered license, and it treats a student found ineligible for placement at a contracted clinical agency as facing course failure and dismissal; the background check and drug testing page explains that rule.
After graduation: licensure as an Alabama NP
The RN license keeps mattering after the degree. Alabama's rules for certified registered nurse practitioner approval, moved into chapter 610-X-9 effective January 10, 2026, require an Alabama or multistate RN license, national certification and an approved collaborative practice. The Alabama Board of Nursing adds that APRNs holding multistate RN licenses from other compact states still apply for approval before practicing as APRNs in Alabama.
Graduates who plan to practice outside Alabama follow that state's NP licensure path. Samford's NP disclosure, dated as of September 3, 2025, says its MSN and DNP nurse practitioner tracks meet the educational requirements for licensure in every state, while noting it cannot promise any board's decision on an individual application.

Your placement advisor starts with your license map: where your license is valid, whether it is multistate, and which nearby states would need a separate license. We search where you can legally rotate, flag states that review out-of-state programs, and include the preceptor's license details in the packet for your rotation request. If a preceptor practices in one state but holds a license from another, we sort that out before the introduction.

Questions Samford students ask
Does an Alabama multistate license cover Samford clinicals in Georgia?
For the license test, yes. Georgia is a compact state, and its board accepts a Georgia license or a multistate license from another compact state for Georgia residents in out-of-state programs, and an Alabama multistate license reaches Georgia through the compact. The rotation still needs Samford's approval and a site agreement, and Georgia's board wants the clinical instructor for APRN students to hold Georgia APRN authorization.
Do I need an Alabama RN license to attend Samford?
Not if you live and practice in another state Samford accepts. The handbook asks for a license where you practice and where you rotate, so Alabama licensure matters only if you practice or rotate in Alabama. Even then, a multistate license from another compact state meets the RN license test there.
Does the Nurse Licensure Compact cover my NP practice after I graduate?
No. The compact covers RN practice only. Advanced practice is approved state by state, and the separate APRN Compact is not operating: only five states have enacted it, short of the seven it needs. After graduation you apply for NP approval in each state where you plan to practice, starting with the state where you will work.
What does Samford mean by an unencumbered license?
The handbook uses the word without defining it. If your license carries any board order, condition or restriction, or did in the past, discuss it with Graduate Student Services before you apply or register rather than guessing. An early answer saves a late surprise.
Does my license have to come from the state where I live?
Samford's rule looks at where you practice and where you rotate, not where the license was issued. The compact adds its own twist, because a multistate license comes from your primary state of residence. Samford's NP admission rule also looks at residence, excluding applicants who live in the 16 listed states.
