Samford's Georgia status, program by program
Samford's NP licensure disclosure (as of September 3, 2025) puts no asterisk beside Georgia, and Georgia is absent from the out-of-state applicant table on each NP program page. Living in Georgia, or holding only a Georgia license, leaves your application open.

What Georgia's Board expects when an Alabama school places you
The short answer is licensure rules, not program approval. The Board's nursing education page says it has no approval role over post-licensure education, a category that takes in APRN programs, so a Samford MSN or DNP student can train in a Georgia clinic without the Board signing off on Samford. Licensure carries the weight instead.
Three license points on that page reach a Samford student. Georgia residents training at home for a school in another state must practice on a Georgia license, or on a multistate license from a different compact state. Faculty and preceptors teaching in Georgia, on site or online, answer to that same rule. And on APRN programs the page is specific about the clinical teacher: a nurse whom Georgia has authorized as an APRN.
Raise that third point with your course faculty before you settle on a physician preceptor, since Samford keeps its own preceptor rules in the NP Clinical Manual inside the Nurse Practitioner Homeroom. State rules are also among the grounds Samford's handbook gives for turning down a clinical rotation request.
Practice climate and where Georgia NP students look
AANP lists Georgia as a restricted practice state. An NP there practices through a physician who delegates or supervises, Schedule II prescribing carries extra limits, and a Georgia preceptor's day reflects that setup.
Metro Atlanta, with 6,482,182 residents in the 2025 estimate, dwarfs Georgia's other metros such as Savannah, Augusta and Columbus. Systems Georgia NP students commonly search include Emory Healthcare and Piedmont Healthcare, along with Grady, Northside Hospital and Wellstar; they are examples, not sites set aside for Samford.
Close to Alabama, three systems post their own student steps. Piedmont's placement page for Piedmont Columbus Regional takes school requests only during ACEMAPP windows (August for spring, February for summer, April for fall) and wants students cleared 10 days before day one. Tanner Health of Carrollton opens its ACEMAPP application for advanced practice students once a preceptor is in place. Licensing for Georgia rotations
Georgia put the compact into effect on January 19, 2018; Alabama did the same on January 1, 2020. A multistate license from Alabama or any other compact home state reaches Georgia clinics, which is what Samford's handbook asks for: an RN license, current and unencumbered, valid where you work and wherever you train. Look up your own license record to confirm the multistate status before a rotation request goes in.

Georgia's preceptor tax credit stays with Georgia schools
Under Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, dentists, PAs, APRNs and physicians licensed in Georgia can claim a state income tax credit for unpaid rotations taught in community settings. According to Georgia AHEC, only students of Georgia-based programs count, so a preceptor teaching a Samford student earns nothing under it. AHEC and the Georgia Department of Revenue also describe the terms differently after HB 144 revised the program.
Alabama's preceptor tax credit is just as local, covering only rotations in rural, underserved Alabama.

Yes, when the pieces line up. Your Alabama multistate license covers Georgia under the compact, Samford must approve the preceptor and site, and Piedmont Columbus Regional takes requests only in its ACEMAPP windows, months before each term. Must Samford get Georgia Board approval before my Georgia rotation?
Georgia's Board describes post-licensure programs, APRN programs among them, as outside its approval work, so there is no Board approval for an out-of-state NP program to obtain. Its license rules still bind you and your preceptor. Ask your program coordinator whether Samford needs anything further for your chosen site.
Can a Georgia physician precept my Samford FNP clinical?
Alabama's Board of Nursing counts physicians, APRNs and other appropriately licensed, population-focused clinicians as APRN preceptors. Georgia's Board, though, looks for a Georgia-authorized APRN to give clinical instruction in APRN programs. Put that exact question to your course faculty before you accept a physician preceptor in Georgia.
How far ahead should I plan a hospital-based rotation in west Georgia?
Months ahead. Piedmont Columbus Regional's spring requests close at the end of August. Atrium Health Floyd asked for applications at least three months early and reported a pause on new school agreements, and Tanner Health opens its application only once a preceptor is secured. Start the search two terms before the course.
