Auburn, Opelika and East Central Alabama: NP clinicals for Samford students
East Alabama Health in Opelika publishes one of Alabama's clearest NP student processes, and it starts with you: an EAMC preceptor must confirm before you apply, and requests close on fixed Fridays a term ahead. Around it, Phenix City looks across the river to Columbus, Georgia, and Tuskegee has no general hospital at all.

Where this region begins and ends
Lee County (Auburn and Opelika), Russell (Phenix City), Chambers (Valley, Lanett and LaFayette), Tallapoosa (Alexander City and Dadeville) and Macon (Tuskegee) make up this guide. Their 2025 Census estimates total 342,117, up about 4 percent since 2020. Lee and Macon form the Auburn-Opelika metro area (208,013); Russell is part of the Columbus, Georgia-Alabama metro, Chambers of the LaGrange, Georgia-Alabama micropolitan area, and Tallapoosa is the Alexander City micropolitan area. All five sit in the state health department's East Central District.
By approximate road estimates the drive from Homewood is roughly 108 miles to Auburn and roughly 111 to Opelika, with county seats from roughly 83 miles (Dadeville) to roughly 139 miles (Phenix City).
East Alabama Health's rules, from its own pages
East Alabama Health (EAH) runs East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika (316 acute and 20 geriatric psychiatry beds), East Alabama Medical Center North, a 40-bed psychiatric hospital opened in 2026, a freestanding emergency department at the Auburn Medical Pavilion and EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital in Valley, which provides emergency and outpatient care only.
According to its clinical experiences page, every placement is pre-arranged and approved by EAH through its Workforce Development Department, a current signed affiliation agreement with the school must be on file, and preceptor schedules are set through the Education Department. EAH notes that request volume is high. Its ACEMAPP pages add that agreement verification may take up to two weeks, that the drug screen and background check must fall within 30 days, and that direct patient care calls for professional liability insurance.
The decisive line sits on EAMC's ACEMAPP page for students already matched with a preceptor, which includes a Nurse Practitioner application: if no EAMC preceptor has confirmed a willingness to work with you, do not move forward. EAMC expects NP students to arrive with a named, committed clinician.
EAMC's deadlines against Samford's terms
EAH sets preceptorship request deadlines by term. Samford's current plans of study put NURG 723 and NURG 788 in a summer term, NURG 724 and NURG 789 in a fall term, and NURG 730 and NURG 790 in a spring term, so each course has its own EAMC cutoff.

Phenix City, Lake Martin and Tuskegee
Russell County's own hospital, Jack Hughston Memorial, is a 70-bed orthopedic-focused hospital whose page says nothing about NP students. Across the river, Piedmont Columbus Regional takes school requests only through ACEMAPP, in windows of August 1 to 31 for spring, February 1 to 28 for summer and April 1 to 30 for fall, and wants students fully compliant at least 10 days before the start.
A Georgia site is an out-of-state rotation. Samford's graduate handbook expects your RN license to be current in each state where you train, and a request to rotate outside Alabama can be refused under that state's regulations. Alabama and Georgia both belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact, and Georgia's Board says APRN clinical instruction must come from a nurse holding Georgia APRN authorization. Around Lake Martin, Russell Medical in Alexander City (a UAB Health System member) and Lake Martin Community Hospital in Dadeville (Ivy Creek Healthcare) post no student pages. Macon County has no general acute-care hospital: the Tuskegee VA Medical Center serves veterans, Thomas Reed Medical Center offers clinics and ambulance service, and the county's health care authority contracts with Community Hospital in Tallassee.
Health centers and shortage scores
Lee County has no federally qualified health center site in HRSA's file. The region's one health center organization, Quality of Life Health Services, has sites in Lanett, Tuskegee and Phenix City, and rural health clinics such as Opelika Pediatrics & Family Clinic, Access Medical Clinic Alabama in Valley, Lake Martin Family Medicine in Dadeville and Southeast Pediatrics in Tuskegee fill gaps.
On HRSA's 0 to 25 scale, Russell and Macon carry high-needs primary care designations scored 19, Chambers and Tallapoosa low-income designations scored 18, and Lee a low-income designation scored 16. Lee, Russell, Chambers and Tallapoosa share a low-income mental health catchment scored 16; Macon, a Black Belt county, sits in one scored 17.
Chambers, Tallapoosa and Macon are rural in HRSA's records, so a preceptor in Valley, Dadeville or Tuskegee is worth pointing to the tax credit guide.

Questions Samford students ask
When is the EAMC deadline for a spring NP preceptorship?
The last Friday of October, per East Alabama Health's clinical experiences page. Before you apply in ACEMAPP, an EAMC preceptor must have confirmed and your school's agreement must be on file, and EAH says verifying that agreement can take up to two weeks, so leave margin before the Friday cutoff.
Can I train in Columbus, Georgia, if I live in Phenix City?
It can work, but it counts as an out-of-state rotation. Piedmont Columbus Regional accepts school requests only in its ACEMAPP windows, your preceptor needs Georgia APRN authorization and your RN license must be valid there; see clinicals outside Alabama.
Is EAMC-Lanier in Valley an inpatient site?
No. The Valley hospital was converted to EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital, which treats emergency and outpatient patients but no longer admits inpatients. It can support ED or outpatient hours; the system's inpatient hospital is East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, reached through EAH's preceptorship process.
Can a Tuskegee student train at the Tuskegee VA Medical Center?
It is one of VA Central Alabama's two medical centers and serves veterans only. The VA trains students solely under its own affiliation agreement with the school and a credentials letter listing the trainee, as the Montgomery guide explains, so confirm Samford's VA status first and keep Quality of Life's Tuskegee site as a primary care backup.
