The region at a glance

The eight counties are Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Talladega, Cleburne, Randolph, Clay and Coosa, an estimated 391,237 people at mid-2025 and barely changed since 2020. Calhoun is the Anniston-Oxford metro (115,834) and Etowah the Gadsden metro (103,886). Talladega and Coosa make up the Talladega-Sylacauga micropolitan area, which the Census Bureau folds into the Birmingham combined area, while Cherokee, Cleburne, Randolph and Clay sit outside any metro or micropolitan area.

By approximate road routing, Gadsden is roughly 65 miles from Samford's Homewood campus, Anniston roughly 69, Talladega roughly 58 and Wedowee, the Randolph County seat, roughly 97. East Central Alabama AHEC is based in Gadsden.

Floyd, Tanner and Riverview: the published rules

Atrium Health Floyd's ACEMAPP pages say every student is credentialed through ACEMAPP and Floyd must hold an affiliation agreement with the school. For advanced practice students, a Floyd teammate or affiliated practice member must agree to precept first, applications are due at least three months ahead, and new Clinical Education Affiliation Agreements are under a moratorium. The pages do not name the Alabama campus.

Tanner's ACEMAPP process lets an advanced practice student apply only once the student or school has secured a preceptor or sponsoring physician. A school without a Tanner partnership requests one inside ACEMAPP, and every assigned student must meet Tanner's requirements, including a background check and drug screen within 12 months, at least 14 days before the rotation starts.

Riverview in Gadsden uses its own forms rather than a portal: a Student-Instructor Profile form with a preceptor field and the rotation schedule, sent at least two weeks before the first clinical date. A school representative signs off on TB testing, N95 fit, flu, hepatitis B, varicella and MMR titers, a drug screen, a background check, BLS and photo ID.

Placing Samford's courses on the East Alabama map

For NURG 723, adult practices in Gadsden, Anniston, Oxford and Talladega and the Quality of Life sites are the first places to look. NURG 724 needs the lifespan, and the pediatric and adolescent rural health clinic in Talladega shows where the pediatric share can come from. The 300-hour NURG 730 is easiest to sustain at a single site within a short drive.

Four counties carry a high-needs mental health designation, so a psychiatric preceptor there is in real demand for NURG 788 through NURG 790, and NURG 767 therapy hours fit counseling practices. Clay County Rural Emergency Hospital offers emergency and outpatient time but no inpatient training. Students in Talladega or Sylacauga can also weigh the Birmingham metro, inside the same Census combined area.
