Florida residents can apply to every Samford NP track, and Samford's licensure disclosure treats the tracks as meeting Florida's requirements. Florida's approval statute targets schools that prepare nurses for a first license; for graduate programs based in other states, our research turned up no Florida duty to register with the Board or alert it before clinicals begin. Florida's approval law and out-of-state graduate programs
Florida's program-approval statute, 464.019, covers an institution that wants to teach, in Florida, people who have yet to earn a nursing license. The Board describes its own approval work in the same pre-licensure terms. Nothing our research found in Florida law obliges an APRN or other graduate program from another state to win approval, or to send the Board word, ahead of Florida clinicals.
Research can miss things, and Samford's handbook tells distance students to check with the board of nursing and department of education where they plan clinicals. Confirm with your program coordinator before you settle on a Florida site, since state rules remain a reason Samford can give for declining a clinical rotation request.
Protocol practice and who precepts in Florida
AANP puts Florida in its restricted category. Its fact sheet says some Florida NPs must work under a physician protocol for as long as they practice, while others qualify for exemptions, so your preceptor may work under a protocol or without one. Because Samford is an Alabama program, the Alabama Board of Nursing's rules apply, and an APRN preceptor under those rules can be an APRN, a physician, or another clinician with the right license and population focus. Where Florida NP students look
By the 2025 Census estimates, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater has 3,418,895 residents, Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford 2,957,672 and Jacksonville 1,785,500, with the Miami area larger than any of them. NP students there often consider AdventHealth, a Florida-headquartered system with hospitals in several states, plus HCA Florida Healthcare, BayCare, UF Health and Baptist Health South Florida. They are examples, not sites set aside for Samford.
Match the setting to the course: NURG 723 wants adult primary care, NURG 724 family practice across the lifespan, and NURG 788 through NURG 790 psychiatric settings. Community health centers and outpatient practices often cover the FNP side.
TEACH funding, and why Samford hours fall outside it
Florida's TEACH program (section 409.91256, administered by AHCA) reimburses facilities, not preceptors. Community mental health centers, CCBHCs, FQHCs, rural health clinics and certain shortage-area nonprofits may claim for clinical hours they host, whether the learner is an APRN student in primary care or a nursing student, when the legislature funds it and the preceptor holds a Florida license.
Only students of accredited Florida-based schools qualify, which leaves a Samford student's hours out, and the statute carries a repeal date of July 1, 2034. Alabama's preceptor tax credit is limited to Alabama rotations, so neither program applies to a Florida placement for a Samford student.

Questions Samford students ask
Must Samford clear anything with Florida's Board before my rotations?
Our research found no Florida rule that makes an out-of-state APRN program register with or notify the Board ahead of clinicals; the approval statute speaks to pre-licensure education. Samford still reviews every rotation, and your program coordinator can tell you whether anything more applies to your site.
Can a Florida community health center claim TEACH funding for my Samford hours?
Not under the statute as written. The law confines TEACH reimbursement to students from accredited Florida-based schools, so a Samford student's hours sit outside it.
Does Florida's protocol rule stop an NP from precepting me?
No. A protocol agreement governs how the NP practices, not whether the NP can teach. An NP working under a physician protocol, an exempt NP, or the physician can all be proposed as a Samford preceptor, and Samford decides through its approval process.
I live in Alabama near the Florida line. Can I rotate in Florida?
Your Alabama multistate license reaches Florida through the compact, so the license test is met. You still need a Florida-licensed preceptor, Samford's approval of the site and room in your schedule for the drive. Travel costs are yours: Samford neither arranges nor reimburses clinical travel.
