Samford NP clinicals in New Jersey
A New Jersey address or license keeps all of Samford's NP tracks open, and Samford's disclosure of September 2025 finds those tracks sufficient for New Jersey licensure. A New Jersey multistate license covers the license side of rotations in the state, research found no New Jersey approval step for schools based elsewhere, and a law signed in March 2026 changed how seasoned NPs practice, which matters when you choose a preceptor.

Samford prints New Jersey without an asterisk in its NP licensure disclosure, and it is absent from every NP program page's Out-of-State Applicants table. The New Jersey row of that disclosure links to the Board of Nursing inside the state's Division of Consumer Affairs.

Joint protocols, the 2026 law and your preceptor
AANP's May 2026 map keeps New Jersey in the reduced column: to prescribe medicines and order devices, an NP there has needed a joint protocol with a physician collaborator. A law signed March 30, 2026, S2996/A4052, carved out an exception. APNs who have logged over 5,000 hours of active, licensed advanced practice in their population may now offer primary care or behavioral health without that protocol, though not general obstetrics or elective cosmetic services. All other APNs still work under one, and the COVID-era waiver ended in April 2026.
For a Samford student the law is about fit rather than permission. A seasoned FNP running a primary care panel suits NURG 723 and NURG 724; a seasoned PMHNP in behavioral health suits NURG 788 through NURG 790 and the therapy hours in NURG 767. Physicians can precept as well, and Samford approves every name; see preceptor requirements.
No approval step for out-of-state schools on record
Research turned up nothing in New Jersey's rules obliging an out-of-state school to get the Board's approval, or to notify it, before sending students to New Jersey clinics. The Board's program rules in chapter 13:37 of the administrative code concern schools licensed by New Jersey's own higher education commission, and section 1.10(c) covers the reverse case, New Jersey schools placing students beyond the state. Board guidance posted only online went unchecked, because the site refused automated reading during research. Confirm with your program coordinator, since Samford's handbook lets a rotation request fail on state rules.
North Jersey, South Jersey and the states across the rivers
New Jersey's slice of the New York City metro holds about 7.1 million residents, and its share of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro about 1.4 million, in 2025 Census estimates; Trenton-Princeton, at 399,289, and Atlantic City-Hammonton, at 372,047, are the next largest. Students tend to know RWJBarnabas Health, Atlantic Health System and Hackensack Meridian Health, plus Cooper University Health Care in Camden and Virtua Health. Treat them as landmarks, and since most of Samford's affiliation agreements are in the Southeast, expect that a New Jersey clinic may need a new one.
The rivers matter. New York and Pennsylvania are two of Samford's 16 excluded NP states, a rule aimed at where applicants live and hold licenses. New York stacks up more hurdles for a rotation: it is outside the compact, its State Education Department expects any out-of-state nursing program to hold its registration or approval before a student starts a New York clinical rotation, and Samford's 2020 State Authorization list limits New York to programs that are entirely online. Keep rotations on the New Jersey side unless Samford tells you otherwise.
A clinic just across either river can take longer to clear than a farther one inside New Jersey, so ask Samford first.

New Jersey has been a working compact state since November 15, 2021. If you live in New Jersey and hold its multistate license, you meet the license half of Samford's handbook rule for New Jersey rotations and for those in other compact states. Questions Samford students ask
Can a New Jersey nurse apply to Samford's PMHNP DNP?
Yes. Samford accepts New Jersey applicants to the PMHNP MSN to DNP, which starts in August with a June 1 application deadline. The psychiatric clinical sequence runs NURG 767, then NURG 788, NURG 789 and NURG 790, and the track asks for one or two on-campus or telehealth intensives. What happens if I move from New Jersey to New York during the program?
Samford's handbook makes you responsible for telling your program coordinator and meeting the new state's clinical rules. New York is on Samford's excluded list for NP applicants, and Samford publishes nothing on enrolled students who move there, so ask before you sign a lease. Your state follows the permanent address in Banner, updated through the Samford Portal.
Is there a New Jersey tax credit for preceptors?
Research found no New Jersey preceptor incentive program. Alabama's credit, the one tied to Samford's home state, rewards only preceptors teaching in Alabama's rural, underserved areas, so neither applies to a preceptor in Newark or Camden. Will a New Jersey preceptor need to cover all 300 hours of NURG 730?
Samford's plans list 300 hours for NURG 730, the final NP Practicum, and clinical weeks run 10 to 20 hours, so one preceptor carrying the whole course is committing to most of a term. Whether hours can be split between two approved preceptors is not in Samford's public documents; ask your course faculty, who work from the NP Clinical Manual.
