Samford NP clinicals in Tuscaloosa and West Alabama
Tuscaloosa is roughly 60 miles from Samford's campus by road and anchors six counties, three of them Black Belt counties carrying high-needs primary care shortage designations. The region's largest hospital system posts no process for outside NP students, while a 39-bed hospital in Greensboro publishes its NP rotation openings and which terms are already full.

Six counties west of Birmingham
The region is Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Fayette, Lamar, Greene and Hale counties: the Census Bureau put them at 311,309 people in July 2025, roughly 3.7 percent more than in 2020. The Tuscaloosa metro takes in Greene, Hale and Pickens as well as Tuscaloosa County (281,850 people together), while Fayette and Lamar sit outside any metro area. All six belong to the Alabama Department of Public Health's West Central District.
Greene, Hale and Pickens are among the 12 counties named in the 2004 executive order that created the Governor's Black Belt Action Commission, and they count as metro only through their tie to Tuscaloosa. The rest of the Black Belt, from Selma west, has its own Black Belt guide.
Approximate road routing puts Tuscaloosa roughly 60 miles from Samford's Homewood campus and Vernon, the Lamar County seat, roughly 103, the longest trip from campus in the region.
Tuscaloosa's hospitals, the VA and University Medical Center
DCH Health System is the region's anchor: DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Northport Medical Center and the leased Fayette Medical Center. DCH has nothing posted for visiting NP students, which makes it a landmark: any request there rests on a clinician who agrees to teach you and on Samford's own review.
The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, focused on primary care, long-term care and mental health, says it offers associated health training in nursing and hosts more than 500 residents, students and trainees a year, but publishes no nursing student steps. Across the VA, trainees come only from schools holding a VA academic affiliation agreement, and the school sends a trainee list naming each student.
University Medical Center, run by the University of Alabama's College of Community Health Sciences, operates six outpatient clinics in Tuscaloosa, Northport, Demopolis, Fayette, Carrollton and Livingston. It is the base of the college's teaching for medical students and family medicine residents and posts nothing on NP rotations. Greene County Hospital in Eutaw has no student page either.
Hale County Hospital's published NP rotations
Hale County Hospital in Greensboro stands apart with a public page titled for MD/DO, PA and NP students. It lists family medicine and primary care clinics in Greensboro or Moundville, emergency medicine, and psychiatry covering adult, geriatric, child and adolescent patients in outpatient and nursing home settings, plus a four-week community health elective with Project Horseshoe Farm, which also offers shared student housing.
What the page says, as checked in September 2026
- Apply through the online Clinical Rotation Interest Form at least two months before the rotation you want; school coordinators contact the hospital too.
- Family medicine spots are full for summer and fall 2026.
- Psychiatry NP and PA spots are full for summer 2026, fall 2026 and spring 2027.
- The page names no portal and says nothing about affiliation agreements, so Samford's approval and agreement still decide whether you can train there.
Its clinics carry strong shortage signals too: HRSA scores Hale County Hospital Clinic at 22 and Moundville Medical Associates at 21 as rural health clinic designations.
Black Belt shortage scores and health centers
Whatley Health Services is the region's only health center organization, with 11 sites in Tuscaloosa, Eutaw, Aliceville, Carrollton, Gordo, Vernon and Greensboro. Its Tuscaloosa site carries a facility designation scored 22.
Greene County's high-needs geographic primary care designation is scored 21 on HRSA's 0 to 25 scale, Hale's and Pickens's 19, and Tuscaloosa County's low-income designation 20; Lamar's geographic designation is 16 and Fayette's 11. For mental health, Tuscaloosa and Pickens share a low-income catchment scored 18 that HRSA lists as proposed for withdrawal, Fayette and Lamar one scored 17, and Greene and Hale one scored 12.
HRSA treats every county except Tuscaloosa as rural, so an unpaid preceptor in Greensboro, Eutaw or Vernon is the kind Alabama's preceptor tax credit was written for, provided the site qualifies and the registrations line up. Samford's own post-graduate NP residency counts Pickens County among its partner counties, though that program starts after graduation.
West Alabama settings for Samford's courses
NURG 723 fits adult practices in Tuscaloosa and Northport or a Whatley site. For NURG 724, rural family medicine clinics that see every age are the natural setting, and Hale County's Greensboro and Moundville clinics are worth a place on your list once their posted openings return. The 300-hour NURG 730 is simplest with a single preceptor close to home.
Psychiatric students will find inpatient psychiatry concentrated in the city, where the hospital directory lists three state facilities: Bryce Hospital, Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatry Center and Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility, though none was checked for a student page. Questions Samford students ask
Does DCH Regional Medical Center take Samford NP students?
DCH has posted nothing for NP students enrolled elsewhere, so there is no application to fill in. A rotation there would depend on a DCH-based clinician agreeing to precept you, Samford approving the site and an affiliation agreement covering it, all raised through your clinical rotation request. Ask your program coordinator before you plan a term around it.
When does Hale County Hospital have NP rotation openings?
As its page read in September 2026, family medicine spots were full for summer and fall 2026 and psychiatry NP and PA spots were full through spring 2027. It asks for its online interest form at least two months before the rotation you want, so check the page for the next open term and leave time for Samford's approval.
Can I do NP clinicals at the Tuscaloosa VA?
The Tuscaloosa VA says it offers associated health training in nursing, but the VA takes trainees only under an academic affiliation agreement with the school and a school-issued list naming each student. Samford is the one to say whether that agreement exists, so bring it up with your program coordinator well before the term.
Is there a hospital in Pickens County?
The state hospital directory lists none in Pickens or Lamar County. The nearest general hospitals are DCH Regional and Northport Medical Center in Tuscaloosa County and Fayette Medical Center. For primary care, Whatley Health Services runs sites in Aliceville, Carrollton and Gordo in Pickens County and in Vernon in Lamar County.
