Samford nurse practitioner clinicals in Alaska
Samford accepts Alaskans into its NP tracks and lists Alaska among the states where the tracks meet licensure requirements. Alaska then adds a personal step: before clinical work begins, a student from an APRN program based elsewhere registers the preceptorship with the state Board. Alaska also stands apart from the multistate license system that covers Alabama and most of Samford's accepted states, which changes the license you carry into every rotation.

In the NP disclosure Samford issued as of September 3, 2025, Alaska is listed plainly, with no asterisk, and it is missing from the NP program pages' closed-state table. Samford's older State Authorization list also shows Alaska in all three of its columns.

Registering your preceptorship with the Alaska Board
The registration rests on 12 AAC 44.460, which lets the Board register a student from an APRN program based elsewhere for clinical practice in Alaska, and the Board's FAQ tells APRN students to seek it. The Board is registering you, not approving Samford. Expect these steps:
- Secure the preceptor and site firstThe Board registers a preceptorship arrangement it approves, so the preceptor, the facility and Samford's approval of both come before the filing.
- Collect the signed arrangementThe Board wants to see the document tying together Samford, the clinical site, your preceptor and you. Samford's side runs through its affiliation agreements and your clinical rotation request.
- Send in form 08-4253Along with the non-refundable fee, the APRN Preceptorship Registration asks for evidence of your current APRN enrollment and a nursing license, Alaskan or not, that is in good standing.
- Mark the end dateEach registration runs for a year at most and stops sooner if the preceptorship wraps up earlier; one renewal is allowed. Samford's FNP clinicals span several terms, so check whether your sequence needs that renewal.

Who can precept in Alaska, and the practice climate
Alaska's registration form sets its own preceptor standard. The person teaching you must be a physician or an APRN whose license or privilege to practice is current and carries no encumbrance, who works in a comparable practice focus and who supervises, teaches and evaluates you on site. That lines up with the Alabama Board of Nursing's definition used by Samford, which also accepts APRNs and physicians.

Your license: Alaska is outside the compact
Alaska stands apart from the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Board's own compact page explains that lawmakers have yet to approve membership, with two compact bills still waiting in the 2025-2026 session. A multistate license from Alabama or another compact state stops at the Alaska border.
Here the two rulebooks differ. Alaska's registration will take a good-standing license issued by some other state, while Samford's handbook ties your license to two places: the state where you practice and each state hosting a rotation, with the license current and unencumbered in both. In Alaska a compact license does nothing for your clinicals. Sort out the Alaska license before you ask a preceptor to sign anything.
Where Alaska NP students look
Anchorage anchors the state with 405,821 people in its 2025 metro estimate, followed by Fairbanks-College at 93,972 and the Juneau area at 31,609. Alaska Native Medical Center, a tribal health system in Anchorage, and Alaska Regional Hospital, an HCA Healthcare facility, are two familiar names. Providence, the largest hospital operator in the state, runs Providence Alaska Medical Center; Palmer has Mat-Su Regional Medical Center; and Foundation Health Partners operates Tanana Valley Clinic along with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. These are places NP students weigh, not sites set aside for Samford.

Will I need an Alaska nursing license to rotate at home?
Plan on it. Alaska's registration will accept a good-standing license from another state, but Samford's handbook wants a license valid in each state that hosts a rotation, and a multistate license stops at Alaska's border. Confirm with Samford and apply early.
Who files the Alaska APRN preceptorship registration, me or Samford?
The registration belongs to the individual student, so you send form 08-4253 with your license details and proof of enrollment. The school takes part through the signed arrangement the Board asks to see. Ask your program coordinator how Samford provides its piece.
Does one Alaska registration cover my whole Samford clinical sequence?
Maybe not. A registration is capped at a year, ends early if the preceptorship does, and can be renewed a single time. A new preceptor or site may need a fresh arrangement, so check with the Board each time your placement changes.
Can I split clinical hours between Alaska and a Lower 48 state?
Nothing Samford publishes rules out a split, and its program pages describe clinicals in your own community. Each state needs its own valid RN license, each site needs Samford's approval, and each Alaska preceptorship needs its own registration with the Board.
