Multistate licenses are a recent arrival there: Connecticut's compact participation started on October 1, 2025. Its nursing education regulations center on programs that lead to RN licensure and are silent on APRN programs from other states, so work out the plan with Samford before you commit.

Samford's NP disclosure of September 3, 2025 treats Connecticut as open, with no asterisk, and the NP program pages never list it as closed. Connecticut is well outside the Southeast, where most of Samford's agreements sit, so a request for a new affiliation agreement may well be part of your plan.

What Connecticut's nursing regulations cover

Connecticut's nursing education rules live in the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, and their scope clause (20-90-46) aims them at programs whose graduates sit for licensure. Under 20-90-59, such a program from another state counts as approved in Connecticut if three things hold: its own board approves it, its curriculum satisfies Connecticut's RN rule, and its home state's licensure standard is at least comparable. The regulation describes no separate Connecticut filing.

When those programs use Connecticut agencies, the state's ratios and written-contract rules still bind them (20-90-48): no more than two students per preceptor, no more than 16 precepted students per faculty member, and on-site clinical faculty licensed as Connecticut RNs. For advanced students in RN programs, 20-90-51(f) asks preceptors to hold a nursing bachelor's degree, an RN license and two years of experience in the role or specialty.

None of this is written with an NP program such as Samford's in mind, and our research found no Connecticut step aimed at one. Samford sets NP preceptor standards in its NP Clinical Manual and reviews each clinical rotation request, so ask your program coordinator what, if anything, Connecticut adds.

Full practice after a transition period

AANP puts Connecticut in its full practice group, with an entry period attached. A new Connecticut NP spends at least three years and 2,000 hours collaborating with a physician before practicing alone. Your preceptor may still be inside that window or long past it; either one shows you how Connecticut NPs actually work.

Your license, and the states around Connecticut

Now that Connecticut participates, its Department of Public Health says RN students can practice there either on a Connecticut license or on the multistate license issued by their own compact home state. Either route passes the Samford handbook's license test for a clinical state.

The neighbors differ sharply. New York has no compact membership, and Samford accepts no NP applicants from it, so a rotation there is a question for your program coordinator. Massachusetts passed the compact into law yet has not put it into effect, aiming for May 2027, so a Massachusetts clinical still calls for a Massachusetts license. Where Connecticut NP students look

The 2025 Census estimates give the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford metro 1,171,426 residents; Waterbury-Shelton has 463,349, the New Haven metro 578,741, and Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury 978,179. NP students there weigh systems such as Yale New Haven Health and UConn Health, Trinity Health Of New England, Hartford HealthCare, and Northwell Health, a New York-based system that now runs former Nuvance hospitals on Connecticut's western side, Danbury Hospital among them. None of these is a site set aside for Samford.

Is my Connecticut RN license multistate now?

Check before you assume. Connecticut's compact participation started October 1, 2025, and your license record shows whether your own license is multistate. Confirm it with the Connecticut Department of Public Health before relying on it for a rotation in another compact state.

Do Connecticut's preceptor ratio rules apply to my Samford NP clinical?

The ratio and contract rules come from regulations written for programs that prepare graduates for licensure, and those regulations say nothing about APRN programs. Samford applies its own NP preceptor standards through the NP Clinical Manual. Ask your program coordinator whether a particular Connecticut site expects more.

Could my Samford rotation be across the line in New York?

New York sits outside the compact and on Samford's list of 16 closed states for NP applicants. You would need a New York license, and Samford's pages leave open how the closed-state list treats rotations. Ask your program coordinator before you approach a New York preceptor.

Does Samford's NP degree meet Connecticut's APRN licensure requirements?
