The Board's approval step for schools based elsewhere
The rule is 244 CMR 6.03(2). When a school's parent institution is based outside Massachusetts, the Board must approve the clinical learning it runs in the state, through two filings. Part A, renewed yearly, clears the institution and must be in six months ahead of any placement. Part B clears each student's placement at least 30 days before it begins, and no Massachusetts clinical day happens until the Board's approval letter arrives.
The open question for a Samford NP student is scope. The Board's criteria are written for programs leading to the NCLEX licensing exams, and its page is silent on graduate and APRN study. Whether the process reaches Samford's NP tracks is for Samford to answer, so ask your program coordinator before you commit to a Massachusetts clinic. If it does apply, expect a ceiling of two students per preceptor and a two-week notice window for placement changes.
Plan Massachusetts timelines backward. Samford's graduate handbook names state rules and regulations as grounds to deny a clinical rotation request, and a preceptor who agrees three weeks before the term leaves no room for a Board filing if one turns out to be needed.
Who precepts, and where Massachusetts students search
Massachusetts NPs reach full practice, in AANP's terms, once they log two years under a supervising APRN or physician who qualifies, and the state may exempt nurses with equivalent experience. For you, the pool is wide: an established Massachusetts NP or a physician can take you for NURG 723 adult primary care or NURG 724 family practice across the lifespan, and Samford approves each one. Greater Boston holds about 4.6 million Massachusetts residents in 2025 Census estimates, with Worcester (888,502), the Massachusetts slice of the Providence metro (593,640) and Springfield (464,338) next. The systems you will hear named most are Baystate Health, Boston Medical Center, Mass General Brigham, UMass Memorial Health and the Beth Israel Lahey Health system, landmarks for a search. Because Samford's hundreds of affiliation agreements lean toward the Southeast, a Massachusetts site may need a new one. Research turned up no Massachusetts preceptor incentive.
Your RN license while the compact waits
Samford expects a current, unencumbered RN license in your practice state and in each state that hosts a rotation. Massachusetts passed compact legislation in November 2024, but the Board treats membership as dormant until implementation finishes; it reports conditional FBI approval for background checks in May 2026 and aims to finish in May 2027. Until then, an out-of-state multistate license does not reach Massachusetts.
The practical rule: every Massachusetts rotation runs on a Massachusetts license. Near the Rhode Island or New Hampshire line, a preceptor across the border brings that state's license rules too, and New Hampshire and New York are both on the 16-state list Samford's NP tracks exclude. Budget for trips to Birmingham as well: FNP students attend two to three on-campus intensives and PMHNP students one or two.
When should I line up a Massachusetts preceptor for NURG 723?
Work back from the Board's dates. If its out-of-state process covers your track, Part A carries a six-month lead and each Part B filing needs a month. Samford's review and any new affiliation agreement add time on top, so begin the search a full term or more before the course.
Can a Massachusetts physician be my Samford preceptor?
Often, yes. Alabama's Board of Nursing counts APRNs, physicians and other suitably licensed clinicians in the student's population focus as preceptors for APRN programs. Samford approves every preceptor, and each track's criteria are kept in the NP Clinical Manual, found in the Canvas NP Homeroom. A family physician fits the FNP courses; a psychiatrist fits NURG 788 to NURG 790.
Does Alabama's preceptor tax credit help a Massachusetts preceptor?
