South Carolina is missing from the 16-state list Samford uses to decline NP applicants. In the disclosure dated September 3, 2025, the state's row points to the South Carolina Board of Nursing, and every MSN and DNP nurse practitioner track Samford names there is listed as sufficient to meet licensure requirements in the state.

Regulation 91-6 and who it covers
Under regulation 91-6, a nursing school headquartered outside South Carolina needs the state Board's sign-off before it holds clinicals meant to ready students for their first nursing license. The Board then expects that school to keep full approval at home, to have an instructor on site each shift, licensed in South Carolina or a compact state, to sign an affiliation agreement with the clinic, and to follow South Carolina's rules for any precepted time.
Nothing in 91-6 mentions graduate APRN study or RN to BSN completion, and a Samford NP student is already a licensed RN. That gap is worth a direct question. Before a preceptor signs on, ask Samford how it treats a South Carolina site, because its handbook lets a clinical rotation request be turned down over state rules.
Practice agreements and where students look
AANP files South Carolina under restricted practice. Nurse practitioners there carry out delegated tasks under a written arrangement with a physician, with caps on controlled-substance supply. Your NP preceptor therefore works inside a physician relationship, and an office where both teach can cover the adults in NURG 723 and the children NURG 724 adds. Samford approves whichever clinician precepts you.
Greenville-Anderson-Greer tops one million people in the Census Bureau's 2025 figures, Charleston and Columbia follow at close to 890,000 and 880,000, and about 454,000 more live in the Charlotte region's South Carolina counties. The preceptor tax credit, in plain words
South Carolina rewards some physician, APRN and PA preceptors with a state income tax credit, and with a deduction once they pass a set number of rotations. Qualifying rotations run 160 hours or longer, the preceptor must take part in Medicaid, and the student must attend a college located in South Carolina, which leaves a Samford rotation outside it. Lawmakers pushed the end date to tax year 2029 in 2024, while a Department of Revenue ruling still lists the earlier 2026 repeal.
RN licensing for South Carolina rotations
Samford's handbook requires an unencumbered RN license where you practice and in each state where you train. South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina have all been compact members since the Nurse Licensure Compact's January 2018 start, so a South Carolina multistate license also reaches a clinic in Augusta or in Charlotte's North Carolina suburbs. Can South Carolina residents apply to Samford's online nurse practitioner programs?
Yes. South Carolina is not among the 16 states Samford excludes, so the FNP, PMHNP, MSN to DNP and post-graduate certificate routes are open. You complete clinical hours near home and travel to Birmingham for the on-campus intensives: two or three in the FNP MSN and certificate, one or two in the PMHNP tracks.
Does South Carolina have to approve Samford before my NP clinicals?
The Board's approval rule for schools from other states targets clinicals for students who are not yet licensed; graduate APRN training goes unmentioned. Samford holds the affiliation agreements and reviews every rotation request, so confirm with Samford how a South Carolina site fits before your preceptor commits to the dates.
Will the South Carolina preceptor credit cover a Samford rotation?
No. The credit counts a rotation only when the student attends a college in South Carolina, and Samford is in Alabama. Alabama's own credit reaches only rotations in medically underserved rural parts of Alabama. A South Carolina rotation for a Samford student sits outside both programs.
Could I do a rotation in Georgia or North Carolina instead?
Possibly. Samford takes NP applicants from both states, and a South Carolina multistate license is valid in each because all three are compact members.
