Texas is absent from the 16 states Samford's NP tracks decline. Samford's September 3, 2025 disclosure links the Texas row to the Board of Nursing and groups Texas with the states where Samford judges its NP degrees adequate for APRN licensure.

Texas BON approval: who it actually reaches
Some schools from outside Texas face a real gate. For vocational nursing programs and programs leading to RN licensure, the Board requires its approval before students set foot in a Texas clinical setting, NC-SARA participation notwithstanding. Guideline 3.1.3, last updated in May 2026, lays out the steps, starting with clearance from the state's higher education authorities and a filing at least four months before clinicals.
That gate is for diploma, associate degree, BSN and entry-level master's students seeking a first license. As written, the out-of-state approval rules do not extend to RN to BSN completion or to graduate APRN study, where Samford's NP tracks belong. The Board does post a roster of outside programs it has approved. Before a preceptor commits, check with Samford how a Texas site fits, since a clinical rotation request that runs into state rules can be refused.
Delegated practice and the big Texas metros
AANP places Texas in its restricted group. An NP there practices through physician delegation and supervision, maintains written protocols with a physician throughout their career, and prescribes Schedule II drugs only in certain settings. Chapter 219, which governs APRN programs seeking Texas approval, lets licensed APRNs and other licensed clinicians who can supervise and teach serve as preceptors. Samford's NP clinical policies live in its NP Clinical Manual, and Samford signs off on every match.
The 2025 Census estimates count four Texas metros above 2.5 million residents. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington leads at roughly 8.5 million and the Houston area follows near 7.9 million, with the San Antonio and Austin metros each above 2.6 million. NP students often search in systems like UT Southwestern, Baylor Scott & White, Houston Methodist, San Antonio's University Health and Texas Health Resources. Each clinic's student process and Samford's approval settle whether a site works.
What Texas offers preceptors
Texas's preceptor incentive is narrow. Public Texas colleges exempt part of the tuition for Texas-resident RNs who precept undergraduates on the path to a first RN license, and for those preceptors' children; graduate and NP preceptors do not qualify. The state's Nursing Shortage Reduction Program funds Texas schools of nursing, not individual preceptors, and we found no Texas tax credit or NP-specific preceptor grant on the higher education board's pages.
Licensing: a compact state since 2018
Samford wants a clean, current RN license at home and in any state hosting one of your rotations. Texas has issued multistate licenses since the compact launched in January 2018, and a Texas multistate license reaches Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas. Can Texas residents enroll in Samford's online FNP program?
Yes. Texas is not one of the 16 states Samford excludes, so Texans can enter the FNP through any of Samford's doors: master's, doctorate or certificate. Your rotations are in Texas; the on-campus intensives for your track are in Birmingham, Alabama.
Must the Texas BON approve Samford before my NP rotation?
The Board's approval step for schools from elsewhere applies to pre-licensure programs; graduate APRN programs sit outside those rules as written. Samford reviews every rotation request and holds the affiliation agreements, so ask Samford directly about a Texas site before you set dates with a preceptor.
Can a physician precept me in Texas?
Samford approves each preceptor; its NP clinical policies sit in the NP Clinical Manual, reachable only through Canvas. Under the Alabama Board's definition for APRN programs, physicians are among the clinicians who can precept. In Texas, where NPs practice under delegation, an office where the physician and the delegated NP both teach can serve NURG 723 and NURG 724 well.
Can I do a Samford rotation in Louisiana from East Texas?
Ask first. Louisiana, though a compact state your Texas multistate license reaches, is one of the 16 states whose residents Samford's NP tracks do not admit. Samford is silent on clinicals there, so talk it over with your program coordinator before contacting any Louisiana preceptor.
