Samford NP clinicals in Maine
Maine is open to Samford nurse practitioner applicants, and Samford reports that its NP tracks satisfy Maine's educational requirements for licensure. Maine's board has written nothing we could find about schools from other states sending students into Maine clinics. That leaves three practical jobs, a long way from Samford's Birmingham campus: finding the preceptor, clearing the site and holding a license valid wherever you rotate.

Maine's row in Samford's disclosures
Maine has a clean row in the disclosure Samford issued for its NP tracks as of September 3, 2025, and it is nowhere on the program pages' list of excluded states. The NP row links to the Maine State Board of Nursing, while the nurse anesthesia disclosure's row adds the board's APRN licensure requirements, revised in July 2025. Maine also shows up under all three headings of Samford's 2020 authorization list.

Maine's board and out-of-state NP students
Maine's written rules are quiet on this. Chapter 7, the board's education rule, explains how Maine approves its own prelicensure programs and says nothing about clinicals arranged by schools in other states, and nothing on the board's rules list or education pages points to guidance on the subject.
Section 2103(2) of Title 32, Maine's nursing statute, exempts students enrolled in board-approved programs that lead to a first license. A Samford NP student is already a licensed RN, so that clause was written for a different kind of student. With no Maine rule to lean on, put the question to Samford before a preceptor says yes, because the graduate handbook names state rules as a reason a clinical rotation request may fail.
Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
Southern Maine holds the largest metro by far. Students most often name Northern Light Health, Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral Health and MaineHealth; use those names to orient a search, and read nothing into them about Samford.

Maine NPs reach full practice, in AANP's summary, after two years of supervised work, either under a physician or NP or as employees of a hospital or clinic whose medical director is a physician. An experienced NP past that mark practices on their own license and may suit NURG 723, NURG 724 or the closing NURG 730 practicum. For the psychiatric track, look for a prescriber in psychiatry who can carry you from NURG 788 into NURG 790, plus a counseling or therapy practice for NURG 767.
Licensing in Maine and the one state next door
Maine's compact membership took effect on January 19, 2018. A multistate license issued to a Maine resident is honored in Maine clinics and across the other compact states, which is how Samford's rule of a current, unencumbered license in every clinical state is usually met. Maine touches only New Hampshire, a compact state that Samford names among those it takes no NP applicants from. Samford has published no position on clinicals there for students who live in Maine, so ask before planning a clinic across that line. Farther south, Massachusetts passed compact legislation in November 2024 but has yet to put it into effect, so a Boston-area rotation still needs a Massachusetts license.

Questions Samford students ask
Is a newly licensed Maine NP a sensible preceptor choice?
Our research found no Maine rule against it. Keep in mind that during those first two years the NP works under supervision, or inside a hospital or clinic led by a physician medical director, so a second clinician may be part of the picture. Samford approves every preceptor; its expectations sit in the NP Clinical Manual on Canvas, and your course faculty can answer the rest.
Do Samford's certificate programs work for Maine nurses?
Samford accepts Maine residents into the FNP and PMHNP post-graduate certificates, which follow the same 16-state table as the degrees. Because the certificates go unnamed in Samford's disclosures, their licensure status is unpublished. Ask Graduate Student Services, and read the Maine board's APRN licensure requirements, which it revised in July 2025.
When will a Maine license cover Massachusetts clinicals?
Not yet. The Massachusetts nursing board is aiming for May 2027, having received conditional sign-off for FBI criminal background checks in May 2026, and NCSBN still lists the start date as to be determined. Until then, a clinic in Massachusetts needs a Massachusetts RN license, and Samford must approve the site as usual.
How do Birmingham intensives fit a Maine clinical schedule?
Put them on the calendar before anything else. FNP students make two or three trips south, BSN to DNP students attend three multi-day sessions, and PMHNP students one or two. Build each Maine rotation around those gaps and tell your preceptor about the missed days at the first meeting rather than the week before you fly.
