Wyoming clinicals for Samford nurse practitioner students
Samford's FNP and PMHNP tracks take Wyoming applicants, and the NP disclosure rates them as meeting Wyoming licensure requirements. Two other Samford programs are closed to Wyoming nurses, though, and Wyoming's nursing board expects a post-licensure school to tell it in writing before one of its students begins a clinical in the state.

Which Samford programs Wyoming residents can join
Wyoming is absent from the 16 states that Samford's NP tracks decline, so the FNP and PMHNP routes are open. Two other programs read differently. Samford's BSN disclosure and its online RN to BSN page both place Wyoming among the states whose RN to BSN applicants it turns away, and the DNP Nurse Leader page, which is not taking applications from anyone right now, lists Wyoming as well.

Wyoming wants a letter, not an approval
Chapter 6 of the Wyoming Board's rules starts with a gate every school from outside the state must pass: either a Wyoming Department of Education registration or NC-SARA approval. The NC-SARA directory lists Samford as a participating institution. Post-licensure programs, and that includes APRN, DNP and MSN study, then skip Board approval. What replaces it is a letter: for every student bound for a Wyoming clinical, the school sends the Board written notice, and the Board provides a model cover letter to use.
The school also signs a contract with the clinical facility before the first clinical day and retains a copy for the Board's use, a step that sits naturally beside Samford's affiliation agreements. Both tasks belong to Samford, not to you. Ask Samford how it handles the Wyoming notice for your rotation before a preceptor commits, because a rotation request may be denied when state rules stand in the way.
Preceptors in a state of small cities
AANP classifies Wyoming as full practice, so NP-owned clinics belong in the preceptor pool alongside physician offices, with Samford approving each one. The population is thin. Census estimates for 2025 show about 103,000 people in metro Cheyenne, about 81,000 in metro Casper and near 48,000 around Gillette. NP students look at hospitals such as Sheridan Memorial, Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Ivinson Memorial in Laramie, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and Campbell County Health in Gillette.
Distance is the Wyoming problem. A family practice that sees children for NURG 724, or a psychiatric preceptor for NURG 788 to NURG 790, can mean driving between towns. Samford's program pages say the school does not arrange or reimburse clinical travel, so build the miles into your plan with our travel guide.
Licensing: two compacts, three excluded neighbors
Samford expects an RN license in good order for each state involved: where you work and where you train. Multistate licensing arrived in Wyoming with the compact's January 2018 launch. The state has also written the APRN Compact into law, but that compact is dormant: five states have enacted it and seven are needed.
Look hard at the map before planning a rotation near a border. Colorado, Montana and Nebraska all touch Wyoming, and none of the three is open to Samford NP applicants. That rule concerns who may enroll; for a clinic across those lines, get Samford's answer first. Utah and South Dakota, both accepted by Samford, have their own guides: Utah and South Dakota.

Can I do Samford's online FNP from Wyoming?
Yes. Wyoming is not among the 16 states Samford closes to NP applicants, so each FNP pathway Samford offers, master's, doctoral or certificate, is open. Expect two or three FNP intensives in Birmingham, Alabama, with rotations back home in Wyoming.
Why can Wyoming nurses not apply to Samford's RN to BSN?
Samford's BSN disclosure and its online RN to BSN page both list Wyoming among the states whose RN to BSN applicants Samford does not accept. Neither source gives a reason. The rule covers applications to that program only; Wyoming residents can still apply to Samford's FNP and PMHNP tracks.
Does the Wyoming Board have to approve Samford before my clinical?
Not for a post-licensure program like Samford's NP tracks. It wants a letter from the school for each student training in Wyoming, plus a contract with the facility signed before clinicals begin. Those are school steps, so confirm with Samford that they are handled for your site.
Can I do a rotation in northern Colorado?
Check with Samford first. Your Wyoming multistate license reaches Colorado, yet Colorado residents are among those Samford's NP tracks decline, and Samford has published nothing on rotations there. Your program coordinator can say whether a Colorado site can work.
